EFFECTIVE DATE: February 15, 2017
PURPOSE
This policy establishes guidelines for the utilization and care of body armor.
POLICY
It is the policy of the Department to ensure that deputies are adequately protected from an armed encounter by providing each deputy with body armor. While body armor provides a significant level of protection, it is not a substitute for sound basic procedure.
PROCEDURE

- It shall be the responsibility of the deputy, through the chain of command, to make the Sheriff aware of any damaged or worn body armor.
- Body armor shall be worn at all times by uniformed deputies. This includes any extra or off duty assignments.
- Non-uniformed deputies shall keep their body armor in their possession (inside vehicle), but are not required to wear the body armor unless deemed necessary (serving of arrest or search warrants).
- Exceptions to this policy shall only be authorized by the Sheriff.
- Deputies shall wear only Departmental approved body armor.
In regards to: All Rules, Regulations, Policy & Procedures and Special Orders are at the discretion of the Sheriff based on departmental need and the severity of the infraction.
