PERSONAL APPEARANCE

PURPOSE:
This policy establishes standards for the neat and uniform appearance of all Department employees.
POLICY:
Employees of the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Department are highly visible to the general public and reflect morale, pride, professionalism and efficiency of the Department. Each employee is a representative of the entire Department and at all times, shall remain aware of his appearance.
UNIFORMED EMPLOYEES:
Uniformed employees shall wear the authorized uniform of the Department. Uniforms will be worn in their entirely. Uniforms shall not be worn other than during assigned working hours, during law enforcement training activities, court appearances and during Departmental approved off-duty employment. All uniforms and equipment shall be maintained in a clean serviceable condition and shall be ready at all times for immediate use.
Only Departmental badge, rank insignia, and name tag shall be worn upon a uniform shirt. Any other item to be worn must be approved by the Sheriff.
Name tags shall be worn above the right shirt pocket. Rank Insignia shall be worn on the collar.
Cell phones, if carried while in uniform shall be worn on the gun belt. The Department assumes no responsibility for personal cell phones worn while on duty.
Upon resignation, termination, or retirement, all issued uniforms and equipment shall be returned in clean condition.
The Sheriff may, at his direction, designate other Departmental uniforms to meet special unit and operational needs.
PLAIN CLOTHES EMPLOYEES:
The Sheriff will designate plain clothes assignments.
GENERAL APPEARANCE:
While on duty, employees shall appear neat and well-groomed unless the nature of their assignment requires otherwise.
Hair shall be neatly groomed. Uniformed male employees shall not allow their hair to extend below the top portion of their collar not fall below the eyebrows. Female employees, shall maintain their hair in a neat appearance.
Display of tattoos is at the discretion of the Sheriff. Employees may be required to wear a covering sleeve or other covering garment.
Mustaches are permitted, however must be kept neatly trimmed. No portion of a mustache shall fall below the lower lip. Exceptions may be made for employees assigned to non-uniformed assignments.
Division Commanders and the Sheriff may, at their discretion, prohibit employees from wearing certain jewelry items.
OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS:
When an employee is representing the Department in his official capacity, he shall appear in uniform when practical.
Employees not appearing in uniform shall wear professional dress attire.
The above described apparel shall be worn for all court appearances.
In regards to: All Rules, Regulations, Policy & Procedures and Special Orders are at the discretion of the Sheriff based on departmental need and the severity of the infraction.
