TITLE:     CORRECTIONS OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES

EFFECTIVE DATE:  February 15, 2017

 

POLICY:

 

This policy establishes the responsibilities of a Correctional Officer for the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office.

 

It is the responsibility of the Correctional Officers to make sure of the following:

 

  • Inmates do not use desk phone unless in an emergency; and this it to be logged.

 

  • All trustee inmates are to wear orange with EPSO on back.

 

  • Check all allowable packages by removing the contents from bag and discarding bag. (DO NOT send paper bags, or plastic bags into the cells).

 

  • Carefully check medication, do not let inmate trustees help with medication, either to fix or pass out.

 

  • No trustees will be allowed to be alone while passing out food trays, or while picking food trays up.

 

  • All doors to cells will remain locked (outside doors) at all times unless business is being conducted by a Correctional Officer.

 

  • No contact visits will be allowed with any inmates regardless of trustee status, or locked up.

 

  • No food or drinks will be given to any inmates in cells unless authorized by Sheriff or Warden, other than what is provided by the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Jail.

 

  • Kitchen knives will be checked out by morning cook for the purpose of peeling potatoes for breakfast and returned after breakfast is served. A knife will be checked out by the morning cook after breakfast has finished, and will be returned before lunch is passed out. There will be no knives checked out between 12 noon, and 2PM during visiting days.

 

  • All hall doors will remain locked at all times, and will only be unlocked by a Correctional Officer.

 

  • All prisoners coming in will be stripped searched and all civilian clothing will be taken, bagged, and labeled, and then locked in front of the Courthouse in the Property Room. No inmate is to go to this Property Room unsupervised. The new inmate will be issued orange. He is allowed to keep underwear, socks, and a pair of warm up pants without pockets in his cell. He will also be allowed one pair of shoes, and one pair of shower shoes.

 

  • Correctional Officers will issue razors to the cell on that cells visiting day, and used razors will be picked up before visiting hours start, and the will be discarded.

 

  • When an inmate is released at 12 Midnight if his family or transportation is not there he is to remain in back with the Correctional Officer, and not allowed to stay in the front. If this inmate wants to walk home release him or her through the Sally Port

 

  • There is to be a Correctional Officer with a trustee when garbage or trash is dumped in the dumpster, the Correctional Officer will not stand at the door, he will be with the trustee. Only assigned regular trustees which are assigned to the floor are allowed to throw garbage or trash, and this must be done before dark if possible.
