SECTION: 209 SICK LEAVE POLICY

SECTION:       209

                TITLE:     SICK LEAVE POLICY

                EFFECTIVE DATE:  February 15, 2017

This directive establishes policies and procedures relating to the accumulation and use of sick leave.

  1. PROCEDURES:

Good attendance by all employees is essential to the operation of the Department. Each employee's position is important and everyone is expected to report on time on their normal scheduled hours and accepted overtime. Failure to do so places and immediate unfair burden on fellow employees, is costly and can have an adverse effect on public safety operations.

  1. ELIGIBILITY:

  1. Employees with one (1) through three (3) years of service will be credited with eight (8) hours of sick leave per month accrued at a rate of (3.70) hours per two week pay period.

  1. After completing four (4) years of service, employees will be credited with ten (10) hours sick leave per month accrued at a rate of (4.62) hours per two week pay period.

  1. SICK LEAVE:

  1. Employees (not a family member, friend, spouse, or boyfriend/girlfriend,

unless the Employee is incapacitated and cannot speak) MUST notify their supervisor directly in as advance time as possible, but in no case later than three (3) hours prior to the start of any other designated shift arrangement.

When making notification employees must give a specific reason for their absence, phone number where they can be reached at, and estimate of when they will return to work.

2,     A physician's note will be required for an employee to return to work if the

employee is absent for three (3) or more consecutive working days.

Employees returning to work without a physicians note will be sent home

subject to loss of pay or being charged with additional sick leave.

  1. Employees absent for more than five (5) days, or anticipating an absence of

more than five (5) days, must be evaluated for placement on medical leave.

Documentation from a physician describing the medical problem and estimated length of time employee will be unavailable for work must be provided to the Supervisor as soon as possible after it is determined that absence will exceed five (5) days.

  1. Employees absent for three (3) or more consecutive working days without

making proper notification will be considered to have voluntarily resigned

their position.

  1. The Sheriff reserves the right to contact an employee when he/she has

Called off due to illness, to check on the validity of the call off.  Call-offs found NOT to be valid will be handled as per the Department disciplinary policy.

  1. USE OF SICK LEAVE:

  1. Sick leave will be granted to employees upon approval of Supervisor for the

Following:

  1. Illness or injury to the employee
  2. Medical, dental, or optical examination or treatment of the employee
  3. Pregnancy and/or childbirth and related conditions.

  1. Sick leave is for employee illness only, not for illnesses in the family.

  1. Employees are charged for sick leave only for days upon which they would

have been scheduled to work. Sick leave payment will not exceed the normal scheduled work day or work week earning.

  1. Employees failing to comply with sick leave policy will not be paid.
